- On
August 2nd,
2007, a Russian expedition was sent to the bottom of the
Arctic Ocean. They descended to a depth of
4.3km as part of a research programme in support of their
territorial claim to the region. A Russian flag was planted on
the seabed directly under the North Pole.
-
Danish researchers have recently embarked on a similar mission
to the Lomonosov Ridge, with the aim of collecting geological
data and to ascertain which geological plates it is connected.
The ridge is believed to be linked to Russia’s plates, and forms
part of their claim to ownership as well as Denmarks.
- Canada is planning on building two military facilities in the
Arctic in an effort to assert sovereignty over the region.
- The Healy, one of four icebreaker ships owned by the U.S.A.,
left Seattle on an Arctic research mission shortly after
Russia's expedition. The U.S.A has recently commissioned the
construction of a further two of these ships to replace its
ageing fleet.
